M.I.A. // Orange County Punk/Hardcore legends since 1980
Forged in the desert of Las Vegas, Nevada in 1980, M.I.A. migrated the next year to Southern California, becoming part of the early Orange County punk scene, playing regular shows at the infamous Cuckoo’s Nest. In 1981 the band recorded nine songs. One song from the session appeared on the classic Maximum Rocknroll fanzine compilation Not So Quiet on the Western Front (Alternative Tentacles, 1982), another on the seminal American Youth Report compilation (Bomp, 1982) the rest landed on the Last Rites for Genocide and MIA split LP (Smoke Seven, 1982). After a show supporting the Dead Kennedys in 1983, the band made a deal with Jello Biafra to release their next LP, Murder in a Foreign Place on Alternative Tentacles in 1984. With two interim national tours, Notes From the Underground (National Trust) was the 1985 follow-up, recorded with legendary producer Thom Wilson ( T.S.O.L., D.I., Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., etc.). Their final album, After the Fact (Flipside) was released in 1987, with another national tour with the Descendents. Singer Mike Conley passed away in 2008 following a tragic accident. Original members Nick Adams (guitar), Paul Schwartz (bass) and Larz Pearson (drums) perform as a three piece with Adams taking over vocal duties. In 2023, French label Modern City reissued Notes From the Underground and After the Fact as a special 2 LP set. To celebrate the record’s 40th anniversary, Modern City and Alternative Tentacles are reissueing Murder In a Foreign Place this summer, adding 8 previously unreleased tracks. The band is teaming up with Bleakness from Paris to tour Europe for the first time ever in the fall, playing 10 shows in 10 days and visiting 6 countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Italy and France).
